From time to time, uploading and inserting images into your lesson, assignment task, quiz/test, discussion, or other Canvas activity can enhance the students' experience in what you're teaching. There is much data to suggest that the current generations of kids respond very strongly to the use of visual imagery so it makes sense to play to that strength to bolster their involvement and hopefully their retention as well. Additionally, anything you can do to reach across to stimulate the various learning styles can't hurt your cause.
How Do I Upload a File/Image?
Let's follow the process for uploading any particular image using this random PLI image:
All images need to be uploaded in the EDIT tab area of the assignment, quiz, discussion, page, etc.
Click on the image icon drop-down and select Upload Image
From here, you have 3 choices of where you can assign an image: it can be one on your computer/device already, it can be from a free repository called Unsplash, or it can link from a website (with attribution needed).
A) Upload From Your Computer/Device
*This is the easiest method*
Uploading from your Computer/Device- Click in the Upload image space to open a folder to navigate to your image or if the image is already open in a folder, you may drag that image to this window.
Be sure to click the SUBMIT button to finalize your upload.
B) Use Unsplash the Image Repository Partnered With Canvas
The next method is to upload an image from an image repository that is linked to all Canvas courses called Unsplash. Please read below to understand the terms and conditions for the use of Unsplash.
Unsplash License Terms in Detail
To use Unsplash in Canvas (still under the EDIT section of your Canvas assignment)-
1-Click here to search the Unsplash site in a separate tab.
From there, upon locating a picture you want to use, you will need to download it to your device.
2-Click the Download dropdown arrow, then select the file size you prefer (small or medium would likely be the best fit in your Canvas course). Pay attention to where on your device your download is being sent to so that you may find it again in the next step.
3-Then in Canvas, in the Edit section, click the Image Icon dropdown and select Upload Image.
4-This will open a field to let you upload your image. Using one of the features indicated, drag and drop or click to browse your computer, select your image to load from wherever you downloaded it.
5-Attributes. Please consider leaving attributes when using Unsplash. Most of the time that just entails leaving the author's First and Last Name as well as the phrase or caption "from Unsplash"
6-Before selecting Submit, you may need to check the box for Decorative Image.
C) Link to a Website
A third option for uploading an image for your lesson would be to link directly to a website. If you choose to embed the specific image itself, be sure to get the URL of just the image on the site and not the overall website URL. For example: www.find.com/image14 instead of www.find.com
Be sure to click the SUBMIT button to finalize your upload.
