Canvas can send you email notifications when events happen in your enrolled courses. It also gives you a lot of choices when it comes to what you get notified of and how often.
Adding Contact Info
To see your current contact methods for your Canvas notifications, go to Account and then Settings. The email you use for your Canvas account will automatically be listed as a mandatory selection under Email Addresses. However, you can add more email addresses directly by clicking + Email Address (1) below it.
You can also add other contact forms. There is automatically an option for push notifications on your phone, in case you use the Canvas app and want notifications that way. You can delete that option by clicking the Remove contact method icon next to it. You can also add other contact methods below that by clicking + Contact Method (2). Clicking that will pull up a window with different options supported by Canvas, including text messages and Slack emails.
Editing your Notifications
If you ever feel you are getting too little or too many notifications, here are the steps you can take to rectify that.
Log into Canvas and click Account in the left-hand menu
You can choose what you get notifications/emails for and how often by clicking the icon next to each type of information. The Email column of course refers to email notifications. The Push Notification column refers to notifications you can get on your phone if you have the Canvas app installed.
Click Notify immediately to get a notification the moment it happens.
Click Daily summary to get one daily report with all the notifications that have Daily summary selected.
Click Weekly summary to get one weekly report with all the notifications that have Weekly summary selected.
Click Notifications off if you don't want notifications/emails on that information at all.
App Push Notification:
There are only two options for push notifications. You can choose to either turn them on or off.
Notifications by Course
You can choose to get the same level of reports for each course by editing your settings for "Account", or change it on a course-by-course basis. To edit another course's notifications, click the Settings for dropdown, and then click the course you want to edit the notifications for.
To completely turn off notifications for a specific course, toggle off Enable Notifications for [Course].
If you choose to have notifications for a course enabled, it will automatically take on whatever you set in your Account section. However, if you manually set the notification amount in an individual course, it will no longer change based on what you set for your whole account. For example, if you choose to be notified immediately of Announcement replies in your Math course, that selection won't change if you subsequently set a different notification option in Account settings.
