One of the functions you'll want to become familiar with, as you increase your expertise in Canvas, is how to reassign an assignment in Speedgrader. This is an intermediate to advanced level skill so if you're still working on honing the basics of Canvas, bookmark this one and come back in a few months.
As an instructor, you can reassign an assignment in SpeedGrader. The reassign assignment button is available for graded assignment submissions once a comment has been added by an instructor.
*Conditions to Consider for re-assigning work:
-Students can view reassigned assignments from the list view dashboard.
-The reassign assignment button is not available for quizzes or graded discussions.
-The reassign assignment button is not available for external tools, on paper, and no submission assignments. In these cases, you would simply have to message the student through Canvas Inbox to tell them to re-do and re-submit their work.
-The reassign assignment button is only available for assignments with due dates.
-If the assignment's settings do not allow students to make an additional attempt, the reassign assignment shows that the assignment is not able to be reassigned.
*You would need to make this change in the original assignment, under the edit section. go to module, select your assignment, open it, select edit, scroll down till you see submission type and submission attempts:
Open Speedgrader from an assignment and select the student whose assignment you want to reassign. This is completed in the assignments comments section below.
In order to reassign as an assignment, you must add a comment in Speedgrader first.
Enter your comment in the comment field and then click the submit button.
Once your comment has been typed in and the submit button pressed, the reassign assignment button activates. Then click submit again.
This is what the student sees on their end of things:
Use the Comment Library When Grading
Canvas has developed this handy tool in Speedgrader to allow you to create a library of responses to select from when providing student feedback. This allows you to select from a collection of your prior responses and not have to type each unique response.
First, activate your Speedgrader feature by opening your Gradebook and clicking on any assignment you would like to grade. Then click the small box with the right-facing arrow.
This will trigger a pop-out window from the right side of your screen where you can click SpeedGrader
There is a small list icon just above the comment space for providing student feedback, click on that.
This will trigger a pop-out window to appear from the right of your screen.
Click the button to toggle the feature ON
Then in the field below it says "Add comment to library". Use this space to enter several common responses that you might send for work related to your course.
Here are some examples of commonly used responses:
-Great Job!
-Nice attention to detail
-Incomplete. Please finish and resubmit
-This is not your best effort. Please do better and then resubmit
-Your assignment does not meet the rubric requirements. Please view that document again, complete your work properly, and then resubmit
-You are missing labels and/or colors on your map. Please complete this and resubmit
-You did not show work on each problem. Please do that and resubmit
*When you finish entering each comment, click ADD TO LIBRARY
Then as you grade, to insert a comment from the library, just click the list icon, select your comment by clicking it, and it will appear in your comment field.
What If I Didn't Grade Through Speedgrader, Can a Student Still Submit Work a 2nd Time?
As long as the assignment itself is set in the edit section to allow for multiple submissions, you can simply ask the student at any point to re-submit work if what they have given you is unsatisfactory. It is very common for a student to hand in work that could use some level of improvement. If our goal is student mastery, allowing re-submissions would be a logical and reasonable step in that process.
