Exporting Grades From Canvas
Frequently, campus facilitators and other officials will need to "pull" grades from Canvas for the students they are responsible for monitoring and tracking throughout the year. Whether it's Progress Reports, Report Cards, or any other occasion, grades can be exported from Canvas to .CSV file format in just a few short steps.
Open any Canvas Course.
Click on the Grades Tab, click the drop-down arrow next to Actions, and then click Export.
This file will take a few seconds to generate and will give you a confirmation message that it is processing.
The downloaded file will deposit into your browser's Download Folder. If you are not familiar with where to retrieve this file, please see the following links for directions depending on what browser or device you are using.
When you open that report, it'll be important to know how to interpret the grades. Each grade given during that grading period will be recorded here. Some grades may be in raw number form like 7 out of 9 correct or it may be in the more common percentage (%) display. Either way, the gradebook will calculate the final values as a percentage (%).
If each assignment has been graded and posted by the teacher, then the last 4 columns will display the same values and will represent the Final Average for that Grading Period. That will be the score you record for the students' averages for that grading period.
*Note- the column label of the Final Average (AS, AT, AU, etc) will change depending on the number of total assignments given during the grading period.

Interpreting Exported Canvas Data
There may be cases where you have transferred a student from an identical class, you can import their grades into the new Canvas course. Please make sure the student is enrolled in the new course before you begin the process of importing their grades from the previous course. You will follow similar steps to export their grades from their first course. Before you select Actions, you will want to search for the student in grade book.
Then select Actions>Export Current Gradebook View
Once the export has been downloaded, you will then go to the new course that the student is in and access the grade book. You will then select Actions>Import.
A page will open allowing you to select the CSV file to upload. Select Choose file and locate the downloaded CSV in your recent download.
Once you have selected the file, select upload data
You will then receive a message that the data for the student was imported successfully.
